Implementing the RMAP Upstream Mechanism Benchmarking Framework: Expectations for Facilities and Assessors
As part of implementation of the RMI Interoperability Framework, the RMI is transitioning from its Upstream Mechanism (UM) Recognition approach to a new Upstream Mechanism Benchmarking framework. The updated approach provides a consistent method for evaluating how information, services, and outputs provided by UMs support applicable RMAP requirements and will become a required component of the RMAP assessment process beginning in January 2027 for facilities utilizing UMs.
This training will provide an overview of the new benchmarking approach, explain how it builds on existing RMAP processes, and introduce the updated Upstream Mechanism Benchmarking Assessment Tool and guidance. Participants will learn how facilities should evaluate and document the use of UM information within their due diligence programs, how remaining gaps should be identified and addressed, and how assessors will review the use of UM information during RMAP assessments.
Topics will include:
- Overview of the Interoperability Framework and Upstream Mechanism Benchmarking.
- Overview of the updated Benchmarking Tool and guidance.
- Evaluating how UM information supports applicable RMAP requirements.
- Identifying and documenting gaps between UM support and RMAP requirements.
- Facility expectations beginning January 2027.
- Assessor expectations beginning January 2027.
- Practical examples and implementation considerations.
- Questions and answers.

In-Person Training
The RMI holds in-person training for smelters and refiners and for assessors multiple times a year in multiple geographies. The RMI Members are welcome to attend RMI in-person training
These are half-day or one to two full-day sessions providing in-depth training on the RMI standards for assessors and assessees. RMI has held in-person trainings in China, EU, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, UAE, UK and USA, and we are always looking to expand in-person training to more geographies.
Webinars
These are 1-hour to 4-hour live webinars presented in English and Chinese. Recordings are available on the free RMI e-Learning Academy. Each webinar focuses on specific requirements of the revised standard and provides guidance for smelters and assessors on how to translate the revised requirements into practice.

Featured topics include a variety of topics, for example: identifying CAHRAs; OECD 5-step process; risk identification systems; AML and sanction lists expectations and best practices, and Know Your Counterparty processes.
