Voluntary Standards Systems

The RMI partners with and leverages existing initiatives, including voluntary standard systems, that are aligned with our mission to support responsible mineral sourcing globally. We strive to harmonize and align requirements as well as work to formally recognize existing standards and assessment programs that meet the RMI’s tools and program requirements.

What We Do

Since 2018, the RMI facilitates a Mining Engagement Team, bringing together downstream and mining companies as well as voluntary standard systems. The Mining Engagement Team works to identify and implement practical steps to strengthen linkages, facilitate communication and promote the recognition of responsible practices among mineral supply chain actors across industries and value chains.

Working with this group, the RMI developed a RMI Recognition Process as well as an equivalency process to formally recognize programs that meet some or all of the Risk Readiness Assessment industry norms and are credibly implemented by company sites.

The RMI also regularly engages with its stakeholders to identify opportunities for alignment and harmonization of voluntary standards on responsible mineral sourcing.
